The majority of students at Kenya Connect partner schools live in homesteads without electricity. Most families use kerosene in a can to light their homes-- a very expensive, dirty, an unsafe form of light. Due to the lack of light, many students are unable to read or study at their homes in the evening. In an effort to support students reading at home, Kenya Connect launched a “rent-to-own” solar light program in 2016. Working withGreenlight Planet’s SunKing Pico, Kenya Connect developed this program in which families pay $1 per month for 8 months to own the light. With the money generated from the repayment plan, Kenya Connect purchases more lights. As the lights are distributed to students, they are also given a log sheet to record how they are using the light in the home. Are they reading, studying, doing chores? We are monitoring the results and encouraging students with library cards to also purchase a light so they can read in the evenings. Currently we have 2943 lights distributed into the community.
